Our Lord in the Attic Museum

Amsterdam are o istorie religioasă fascinantă, iar vizita la Our Lord in the Attic Museum (Oude Kerk) este un exemplu perfect.

EN: When you say “Amsterdam”, the first image that probably comes to mind is its picturesque canals, lined with narrow houses with elegant facades and full of history.

If you are planning to visit this fascinating city, we have prepared a detailed guide that will help you make the most of the experience – from canal walks and visits to famous museums, to cozy restaurants and lesser-known, but equally charming places.

Here’s what to do in Amsterdam!

Boat trip

One way to start exploring the city is with a boat trip on its canals. Damrak 26 is a great starting point for such tours.

There are 60-minute, two-hour or three-hour tours. So you have a choice. Most tours have, in addition to an audio guide, a helmsman, who can tell you about the main sights of the city, adding small details and local curiosities.

During the 60-minute tour, we learned about the smallest house in Amsterdam, the narrowest canal in the city, and the famous crooked houses, which seem to lean on each other above the water.

If you want to experience this kind of guided tour, I recommend downloading the GetYourGuide app and choosing it from there. Don’t forget to use the code Pierdutiivacanta5 for a better price!

NEMO Science Museum

After the water ride, we went to the NEMO Science Museum, a perfect place for curious people of all ages. Even if you’re not a science buff, the green and futuristic building, designed by Renzo Piano, will impress you.

NEMO is not just a classic museum; it’s an interactive space where you can experience the principles of physics, chemistry, and technology through hands-on exhibits. We spent a few hours exploring the laboratories and the rooftop viewing platform, which offers a wonderful view of the city and harbor.

Our Lord in the Attic Museum

Amsterdam has a fascinating religious history, and a visit to the Our Lord in the Attic Museum (Oude Kerk) is a perfect example. This hidden church in the attic was built in the 17th century to allow the practice of Catholicism in secret, at a time when it was forbidden.

The interior is impressive and retains the authentic atmosphere of the 17th century. We were fascinated by the architectural details and the story of the place, which makes you appreciate the ingenuity and devotion of the people of the past.

Beurspassage

It is a covered walkway located in the center of Amsterdam, between the Damrak and the main shopping street Nieuwendijk. It was originally built to connect different shopping streets and provide a transit space protected from the weather.

Today, the Beurspassage is known for its modern yet elegant architectural design, with colorful mosaics, stained glass windows and curved arches that create a pleasant atmosphere and different from the busy streets of the city center.

Anne Frank House

A visit to the Anne Frank House is essential to understanding the history of Amsterdam and the impact of World War II. The house is where Anne Frank and her family hid and where she wrote the famous diary that her father published at the end of the war.

It is recommended to book your tickets online in advance, as the museum is very popular.

Negen Straatjes

One of the favorite places for shopping and exploring is the Negen Straatjes, or “The Nine Streets”. This small neighborhood, full of independent shops, cozy cafes and vintage boutiques, is a true paradise for those looking for unique items and the authentic atmosphere of the city.

Rijksmuseum Research Library

Even though we didn’t have time to visit the entire collection, the exterior of the Rijksmuseum Research Library is impressive. This grand building impresses with its architecture and sculptural details.
If you have time, you can admire the collections inside, but even a short stop to take pictures of the building is worth the effort. It is a symbol of Dutch cultural heritage.

Bloemenmarkt

Amsterdam is famous for its flowers, and a visit to the Bloemenmarkt is not to be missed. This floating market offers an explosion of colors and fragrances, with tulips, bulbs and exotic flowers.

We wandered through the stalls, admired the arrangements and bought a few tulip bulbs as souvenirs. It is the ideal place to feel the Dutch spirit and add a touch of color to your visit.

Grand Cafe Museum Restaurant le Klas

After a long day of exploring, we stopped at Grand Cafe Museum Restaurant le Klas for a relaxing meal. This place combines traditional Dutch dishes with an elegant decor, perfect for ending the day.

We enjoyed delicious food, took a break and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the restaurant. It is the kind of place that makes a visit to a city complete: not just sightseeing, but also authentic culinary experiences.

We left with wonderful memories, many photos and experiences that made us fall in love with Amsterdam. Whether you are passionate about history, art, gastronomy or just want to feel the atmosphere of a vibrant European city, Amsterdam has something to offer everyone.
