EN: If you arrive in Amsterdam and want to discover something different, I recommend making a stop in Zaandam. We arrived here on a day with capricious weather – sometimes rain, sometimes wind. Even so, we really enjoyed exploring the small city.

It is a small city, but surprisingly modern and creative, which perfectly combines traditional Dutch architecture with contemporary design.
Although many tourists only use it as a starting point to Zaanse Schans, Zaandam is worth exploring at your leisure. It is less crowded than Amsterdam, but full of interesting places.

What to visit in Zaandam

Inntel Hotel

The most famous landmark in the city is undoubtedly the Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Zaandam. The building seems to be taken out of an architectural puzzle – it is made up of dozens of overlapping Dutch „houses”, all in shades of green.

It is one of the most photographed places in the area, and even if you are not staying there, it is worth stopping by for a few photos. Its design tells the story of traditional architecture reinterpreted in a modern way.

Peter the Great’s House

A lesser-known but very interesting place is the Czar Peter House. Peter the Great lived here for a short time during his visit to the Netherlands, when he came to learn about shipbuilding.

The house is extremely small and simple, but it has an important historical charge and offers a fascinating insight into the city’s past.

Zaandam city center

It is modern, with pedestrian areas, shops, and restaurants. The main street, Gedempte Gracht, is the ideal place for a relaxed walk.
Here you will find:

  • local shops and well-known brands
  • cozy cafes
  • restaurants where you can try Dutch dishes

Zaans Museum

Zaandam has a lesser-known but very interesting story: it is considered one of the first industrial centers in Europe. If you want to better understand this part of the city, it is worth visiting the Zaans Museum.

Here you will discover how windmills contributed to the development of the region and how Zaandam became an important economic hub. It is an experience that perfectly complements a visit to the area.

Even though the weather was not on our side, Zaandam pleasantly surprised us. If you have a few hours to spare and want to see another side of the Netherlands, quieter and less touristy, Zaandam is an excellent choice.
