Muzeul Zaans (Zaans Museum)
EN: If you dream of an authentic foray into Dutch culture, in a setting that looks like it came straight out of a postcard, then Zaanse Schans should be on your list. Just a few kilometers from Amsterdam, this museum village takes you back in time to the 17th and 18th centuries, when windmills and traditional crafts defined everyday life.
The atmosphere is exactly as you imagine when you think of the Netherlands: wooden houses painted in green and white, quiet canals, and windmills that still work.
What to see at Zaanse Schans
Traditional windmills
The stars of the place are, without a doubt, the windmills. They are not just decoration – many of them are still functional and have specific roles, just like a few hundred years ago.
Some of the most interesting include:
- De Kat – where pigments for paint were produced
- Het Jonge Schaap – a mill used for sawing wood
- De Zoeker – specialized in the production of oils
Some of them can be visited inside, and the experience is truly fascinating. You can see the mechanisms in action and thus understand how ingenious the technology of those times was.
Traditional Dutch houses and workshops
The wooden houses, painted in green and white, are typical of the traditional Dutch style. You can visit different workshops that show you traditional crafts:
- Clog Workshop – where you can see how the famous wooden shoes are made. A popular stop is the Wooden Shoe Workshop of Zaanse Schans.
- Cheese factories – here you can discover how Dutch cheeses such as Gouda or Edam are made and, of course, taste them (some combinations are surprising – from lavender to pesto!).
- Sweet workshops – where you can see how traditional biscuits and chocolate are made.
Zaans Museum
This museum offers a broader perspective on the history and culture of the Zaan region. Exhibitions include traditional artifacts, the history of local industry, and stories about the daily lives of the locals.
Picturesque grounds and canals
Zaanse Schans is crisscrossed by canals, and the scenery is particularly picturesque. You can take walks or rent a boat to explore the area.
