EN: Bethlen-Haller Castle – how to visit, what you find inside and how much it costs

EN: When you think of castles, you probably automatically think of the Loire Valley, with its imposing palaces, geometric gardens and alleys perfect for magazine photos. But, surprisingly, a castle in Transylvania can make you feel exactly the same emotion. It is Bethlen-Haller Castle in Cetatea de Baltă.

The road to Cetatea de Baltă is quiet, with hills and vineyards that seem to stretch on forever. Even from a distance, the castle makes its presence felt: it is not opulent in the classical sense, but it has that discreet air that makes you curious.

What is it like at Bethlen-Haller Castle?

When I stepped into the inner courtyard, I had the feeling that time had slowed down. The thick walls, round towers and the surrounding silence create a special atmosphere – one in which you want to walk without haste, touch the cold stone and think about how many generations have passed there.

An important thing to know is that the castle tour is guided. At first I thought it might limit the experience, but it turned out to be exactly the opposite: the guide adds context, details and stories that bring each room to life. Basically, you don’t just see the castle, you start to know its story.

Bethlen-Haller Castle Interior

The interior is an interesting combination of history and refurbished elegance. Don’t expect exaggerated opulence or rooms filled to the brim with objects – the spaces are airy, with carefully chosen furniture. The large halls have high ceilings, and light penetrates through the windows, creating a pleasant play of shadows on the walls.

Some rooms retain old elements – massive wooden doors, original architectural details – while others have been discreetly adapted for modern comfort. I liked this contrast: you feel the past, but without feeling disconnected from the present.

The castle dates back to the 16th century and has been transformed over time, but what I found fascinating was how history and the present coexist here. It is not a rigid museum, but a living space, which today also houses a renowned winery.

Can you stay at Bethlen-Haller?

You can only stay if you are part of an organized group (a minimum of 10 people is required). The castle does not operate like a classic hotel, which contributes, in a way, to its exclusive and quiet charm. The price for a room starts at 150 euros per night, for a room in the inner courtyard. If you want to stay in the castle itself, you will have to pay at least 350 euros per night.

If you get here, I recommend you take your time. Walk around the courtyard, visit the vegetable garden or the horse stables. And, if you have the chance, don’t leave without trying the wine – it’s part of the charm of the experience.
