RO: Au trecut 18 ani de când am pășit pentru prima dată în Universitatea „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” din Iași. Mă înscrisesem atunci la două facultăți, dar până la urmă am ales o facultate din București. Recunosc că revenirea aici m-a emoționat, de data aceasta, nu ca posibil studentă, ci pentru a mă plimba prin faimoasa Sală a Pașilor Pierduți.
Ce este Sala Pașilor Pierduți?
Sala Pașilor Pierduți este un loc emblematic din cadrul Universității „Alexandru Ioan Cuza”. Sala se află în corpul A al clădirii principale, pe Bulevardul Carol I. Este un coridor lung și elegant, cu arcade în stil neoclasic și podea din marmură, care leagă Aula Magna „Mihai Eminescu” de celelalte săli de conferințe.
De ce este atât de specială Sala Pașilor Pierduți?
Între anii 1968 și 1978, pictorul Sabin Bălașa a realizat aici 19 murale impresionante, ce acoperă aproximativ 300 de metri pătrați. Stilul său unic, numit „romantism cosmic”, îmbină simbolismul cu suprarealismul, iar nuanțele de albastru conferă sălii o atmosferă solemnă și aproape mistică.
Frescele lui Bălașa tratează teme variate, de la mituri și legende românești, la figuri istorice și momente definitorii din cultura noastră. Printre lucrările cele mai remarcabile se numără:
- „Luceafărul” – inspirat din poemul omonim al lui Mihai Eminescu
- „Prometeu” – reprezentare a mitului grec
- „Ștefan cel Mare” – evocare a voievodului moldovean
- „Moldova” – dedicată regiunii istorice
- „Triumful vieții” – celebrând efervescența vieții umane
- „Omagiu întemeietorilor” – dedicată fondatorilor Universității
Datorită acestor fresce, Sala Pașilor Pierduți este considerată una dintre cele mai mari galerii de pictură murală din România și un loc de referință pentru iubitorii de artă și istorie.
Totuși, nu am putut să nu observ că frumusețea lor începe să fie afectată de trecerea timpului. Umezeala și lipsa unei întrețineri corespunzătoare le-au deteriorat pereții, care sunt acum decojiți, cu colțuri atinse de mucegai – o imagine care m-a întristat.
Dacă ai ocazia să ajungi la Iași, nu rata o plimbare prin Sala Pașilor Pierduți. Vizitează, admiră și povestește mai departe frumusețea acestui loc unic.

EN: It’s been 18 years since I first stepped foot in the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași. I had enrolled in two faculties at the time, but in the end I chose a faculty in Bucharest. I admit that returning here moved me, this time, not as a possible student, but to walk through the famous Hall of Lost Steps.
What is the Hall of Lost Steps?
The Hall of Lost Steps is an emblematic place within the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University. The hall is located in building A of the main facility, on Carol I Boulevard. It is a long and elegant corridor, with neoclassical arches and a marble floor, that connects the Aula Magna “Mihai Eminescu” to the other conference rooms.
Why is the Hall of Lost Steps so special?
Between 1968 and 1978, painter Sabin Bălașa created 19 impressive murals here, covering approximately 300 square meters. His unique style, called “cosmic romanticism,” combines symbolism with surrealism, and the shades of blue give the room a solemn and almost mystical atmosphere.
Bălașa’s frescoes deal with various themes, from Romanian myths and legends to historical figures and defining moments in our culture. Among the most remarkable works are:
- „Luceafărul” – inspired by the homonymous poem by Mihai Eminescu
- „Prometheus” – a representation of Greek myth
- „Ștefan cel Mare” – evocation of the Moldavian voivode
- „Moldova” – dedicated to the historical region
- „Triumph of Life” – celebrating the effervescence of human life
- „Homage to the Founders” – dedicated to the founders of the University
Thanks to these frescoes, the Hall of Lost Steps is considered one of the largest mural painting galleries in Romania and a place of reference for art and history lovers.
However, I could not help but notice that their beauty is beginning to be affected by the passage of time. Humidity and lack of proper maintenance have damaged the walls, which are now peeling, with corners touched by mold – an image that saddened me.
